I.1.
In oude tijden paste het appèl in het geheel niet in het systeem. Men veroordeelde toen op basis van een godsoordeel, en in elk geval niet zonder bekentenis, die vaak op
gruwelijke wijze werd verkregen.

Vorig jaar werd een student veroordeeld die de sociale dienst over een aantal jaren voor
120.000 gulden had opgelicht.
Mevrouw Veenstra werd veroordeeld omdat zij als coördinator een sleutelrol had gespeeld bij de voorbereiding van de punctie.
Nadat de rechtbank een verdachte heeft veroordeeld en het vonnis onherroepelijk is, wordt de opgelegde straf binnen zes weken uitgevoerd.

De rechtbank in Den Haag veroordeelde de SWOCI in februari vorig jaar tot betaling van het
bedrag met rente.
De rechtbank in Zutphen heeft alle zes verdachten in de zaak-Epe veroordeeld tot onvoorwaardelijke gevangenisstraffen variërend van twee tot vijf jaar.
Na herhaaldelijk te zijn gemarteld werd hij veroordeeld tot twintig jaar gevangenisstraf.
De oud-gouverneur werd door een 'revolutionaire rechtbank' van het EZLN veroordeeld tot levenslange dwangarbeid; een straf die hem later werd kwijtgescholden.
Na de oorlog werd Kesselring in Venetië door een Brits militair tribunaal ter dood veroordeeld.

Veel mensen die gepakt worden voor geweld worden nooit daarvoor veroordeeld.
Onder invloed van alcohol reed hij iemand aan en werd daarvoor ook veroordeeld. Hij bood publiekelijk zijn excuses aan en mocht van zijn bestuur blijven zitten.
Hill moet nu in hoger beroep in een zaak die nog dateert uit 1975. Hij werd daarin veroordeeld voor het aanwezig zijn bij de moord op een voormalig Brits
soldaat in West-Belfast.
In totaal werden 45.000 Nederlandstaligen en 28.000 Franstaligen wegens collaboratie veroordeeld.
Vorige week werd een Limburgs bedrijf veroordeeld wegens het exporteren van potjes kersen uit Servië.
Figueres werd ook een rol toegedicht in een inmiddels verjaard oplichtingsschandaal met valse goudmijnen waarin twee Amerikanen veroordeeld
zijn.
Wordt de 'Van der Valk-dynastie', zoals het journaal de clan gisteren eerbiedig noemde, straks veroordeeld om een aanpak die in het verleden uitbundig is geprezen en
bovendien de sympathie van heel veel landgenoten heeft? Dat zou tegelijkertijd rechtvaardig en een beetje hypocriet zijn.
Zeventien van hen werden veroordeeld onder artikel 4 van een decreet uit 1966 dat onder meer verbied om "onware informatie te publiceren met de bedoeling onrust te
zaaien of het vertrouwen van de massa in de doelstellingen van de Revolutie te ondermijnen."
Bouterse werd in 2000 veroordeeld op basis van verklaringen van kroongetuige Patrick van Loon, hoofdverdachte in de Stellendam-cokezaak.

Een 30-jarige man uit Leeuwarden is gisteren door het Leeuwarder gerechtshof veroordeeld tot vijf jaar gevangenisstraf wegens gijzeling, mishandeling en een poging tot
doodslag.
Dit najaar is het honderd jaar geleden dat de Franse legerkapitein Alfred Dreyfus werd veroordeeld tot levenslange opsluiting op Duivelseiland wegens verraad van staatsgeheimen aan de
Duitsers.
Het andere geval betreft de Franse diplomaat Georges Paques, die in 1964 tot levenslange gevangenisstraf werd veroordeeld wegens verraad van militaire geheimen aan de Sovjet-Unie (hij was
toen bij de NAVO gedetacheerd).
Rushdie leeft ondergedoken sinds hij door Iraanse religieuze leiders ter dood is veroordeeld vanwege het vermeende godslasterlijke karakter van de Duivelsverzen.
Een groot aantal van hen is inmiddels veroordeeld tot boetes en in sommige gevallen lange gevangenisstraffen voor 'contempt of court', een
Angelsaksisch juridisch begrip dat zware straffen zet op belediging van het hof door opzettelijk eerdere uitspraken te negeren.
Een vriend en medepartijlid is veroordeeld tot drie maanden gevangenisstraf, waarvan één voorwaardelijk, voor twee vechtpartijen.
Uiteindelijk zou hij voor deze zwart-geldaffaire door de strafrechter worden veroordeeld tot een voorwaardelijke gevangenisstraf van zes maanden en een boete van 250.000 gulden.
Als het vonnis daadwerkelijk wordt uitgevoerd, zou het de eerste keer zijn dat iemand in Nigeria ter dood wordt veroordeeld onder de islamitische wet, die
inmiddels in twaalf deelstaten in het land is ingevoerd.
John Sankus, de 'leider' van een internationale groep internetpiraten, is door een Amerikaanse rechtbank tot 46 maanden celstraf veroordeeld op basis van de schending
van auteursrechten.

In een gewrongen constructie stelt ze de verhouding tussen mishandelende echtgenoot en
mishandelde vrouw gelijk met een oorlogssituatie en eist een dienovereenkomstige rechtspraak: in een oorlog veroordeelt de rechtbank immers het doden van de tegenstander lang niet altijd
als moord.
Alleen Fuegi's uitspraak waarvan Brechts dochter een direkt slachtoffer is, werd door de rechter veroordeeld als lasterlijk.
De Zwitserse rechter Jürg Hug heeft donderdag in Bern het besluit van de UEFA titelverdediger Olympique Marseille uit te sluiten van deelneming aan het Europa Cup-toernooi voor
landskampioen voorlopig veroordeeld als onrechtmatig. De Europese voetbalbond werd opgedragen binnen tien dagen de argumenten voor de schorsing van Olympique aan de rechter voor te
leggen.

Het Interamerikaans Hof van justitie heeft Suriname veroordeeld een schadeloosstelling te
betalen van een half miljoen aan de nabestaanden van de massamoord in het dorp Moiwana in 1986.
Een Amerikaanse rechter veroordeelde een moeder ertoe om haar strafbare dochter een maand lang letterlijk aan de ketting te houden.

La cour a condamné Aboul Ela Abd Rabbo à quinze ans de prison, Ali Hassan Ali à dix et Bassem Khalil Chahine à trois.
Le chef du commando, Anis Naccache, un Libanais sunnite âgé de trente-deux ans, est arrêté avec ses deux complices et sera condamné, en mars 1982, à la réclusion à perpétuité.
Mais cet assassinat, plus encore que la fatwa qui condamne à mort l'écrivain britannique Salman Rushdie, avait empêché une réconciliation totale
entre Paris et Téhéran, malgré le rétablissement des relations diplomatiques en 1988 et le règlement du contentieux d'Eurodif.
Accusés d'avoir participé à un projet d'assassinat du roi Hussein de Jordanie en juin dernier, trois islamistes ont été condamnés à mort, dimanche 16 janvier, par la Cour de sûreté de

Magistrates themselves were initially hostile to the aims and methods of purity groups. They were loath to convict, especially in cases which seemed to contradict common
law.

The penalty was imposed primarily as a result of evidence provided by the victim and in spite of the tenor of the earlier summing-up by the judge who had told the jury that it was
dangerous to convict on the evidence of an alleged victim alone.
The magistrate decided whether to try a case summarily or to set in motion the process of committing it to a superior court. He was also given the power to convict on any charge within
his jurisdiction, even if another offence was originally specified on the charge sheet.
Actually, if you kill your wife in
the act, no jury will convict on murder 1. However, there is
a good probability you'll get convicted on voluntary manslaughter. The D.A. won't even bring murder charges because of this reason. (It's called a killing in the heat of
passion).

chief criminal was prosecuted and convicted, all within a space of three years.
Since it could not be said that the jury would inevitably have convicted the defendant if before the trial the defence had been given the statement of the deceased's husband and the two
statements of her sister, if the jury had properly been directed with regardt o evidence as to the defendant's previous good character, and if they had received guidance from the judge on
their problem concerning the evidence, the proviso to section 14(1) of the Judicature (Appellate Jurisdiction) Act could not be applied to uphold the conviction.
Captain Ian Farquhar (47), of the Beaufort Hunt, was said to be planning an appeal after North Avon magistrates at Yate, near Bristol, convicted him at the end of a three-day trial
yesterday.
The four accountants convicted in the £40m Blue Arrow trial have had their convictions overturned, and, in the face of criticism from the Appeal Court,
the Serious Fraud Office has also abandoned a second trial.
A BOY of 17 and two men in their twenties face execution in Burma for planting a bomb, but others involved in the crime say they took no part in it. Human rights organisations maintain

Richard Greene, Isabella ( c. 1759–1857), poet and novelist, was born c .1759 at Cairnburgh Castle, the youngest of the three daughters of William Fordyce, a military officer of Aberdeen,
and his wife Elizabeth Fraser, niece of Alexander Fraser, Lord Strichen. Her grandfather, William Fordyce of Anchorthies, was a figure of scandal: a successful merchant and sometime
baillie of Aberdeen, he was eventually convicted for his part in a kidnapping ring.
Before purchasers of a faulty building go out and celebrate, let me point out that, while the act penalises those who commit an offence, it
does not help those against whom the offence is committed. If an estate agent is convicted under the act the client does not automatically have a right of action in civil proceedings for
loss which may have been brought about as a result of the offence.
More than 130 political prisoners from Irian Jaya are currently serving lengthy prison terms for advocating the province's independence from Indonesia. Most have been convicted since 1988
under Indonesia's sweeping Anti-Subversion Law, accused of attempting to establish an independent state of “West Papua”.

Four
people died and 34 were injured on Oct. 5 in rioting in Lomé, described as the worst disturbances in 23 years of one-party rule. The protests began at the law courts when two men
convicted of distributing anti-government leaflets each received the maximum five-year sentence.
But for himself he disliked coincidence of any sort and always sought for a logical answer. Even in cases in the past, where he had looked for one and found none, he had always felt if he
had searched harder or been luckier, then the answer would have been found. Like the case, some years ago, when two men died in the same way from similar stab
wounds on the same day in the same street. He never was able to prove a connection, but he remained convinced that there must have been one. The woman convicted of killing one man always
denied killing or even knowing the other.
In 1949 General Motors was convicted of conspiring with Standard Oil of California and Firestone Tire to replace electric trams in several cities (including Los Angeles) with buses.
Anderson, who had pleaded not guilty and claimed the woman had handed him “sex on a plate”, was convicted by a 10-2 majority of raping the woman on 4 April, last year.
Casual cattle stealers ran more risk than those involved in organized thievery. The local magnates who did not personally carry out thefts
were very rarely tried, although some middle-level headmen were convicted for forging sale vouchers.
Under section 14 the police are given a power to impose conditions on the same grounds as in the case of marches (see: Police v. Brickley, States, Kitson & Kitson (Mag.Ct 1987), where
demonstrators were convicted for ignoring a condition that they should not stand immediately outside the South African Embassy).

The recent case of a consultant convicted of attempted murder for administering a lethal injection of potassium chloride to a patient in
intractable pain has highlighted the issue of pain that, contrary to expectation, does not respond to opiates.
